A Laptop Essential: The Battery

Updated: Jan 9

Having a replacement battery for your laptop is quite different from charging your cell phone when the battery runs dead. Purchasing a replacement battery, admittedly, is something I rarely think about as I constantly rely on simply using electricity to power my device.

I considered myself rather savvy and no longer technically nascent, by packing a portable multiple electrical outlet along with my laptop. This serves several purposes as I can charge my laptop, and phone and at the same time, not hog up the entire wall, leaving an outlet for someone else to use. Then, imagine my surprise when I realized that not everywhere I go has an electrical outlet. Quelle Dommage! Believe it or not, not every coffee shop has an outlet at every table. Hmmm, a problem posed, when I begin to realize how quickly a battery charge runs low, then out.

Finally, taking a tip from my teenage daughter, I learned the necessity of having a portable battery, at the ready when needed the most. As handy as that is, when it comes to the laptop, a battery charger of a different sort is needed, rather than one to power up a cell phone. Here, there are a number of options:

This leads to an even deeper concern, mainly how long can I recharge my laptop battery before it actually needs to be replaced and when it does, which brand is best.

A Google search states, Laptop batteries usually only last from 2 to 4 years, which amounts to about 1,000 charges. HP, agrees with this assessment, adding, each time you recharge your laptop you step an inch closer to its demise. Wow! who knew?

I am the type of person that expects all of my technical gadgets to be up and running as soon as I hit the button. Though far from being a laptop, this includes my car. I expect it to start as soon as I turn on the ignition. In fact, when I first got my car, I had to remind myself to check the gas gauge. It wasn't until I got stuck during rush hour in the middle of the Long Island Expressway after I ran out of gas that I learned that lesson.

Not wanting the equivalent of that to happen when using my laptop, I've begun to do some research. Having a battery that is compatible with your respective device as opposed to any generic, one size fits all is of utmost consideration in choosing a replacement battery.

This is not as costly an investment as one might think but having your replacement battery on hand when you need it is priceless. This includes ensuring you purchase a lithium-based battery, which will prevent the laptop battery from overcharging. Though, ideally, you should cease charging your battery once it reaches 85% instead of waiting until it reaches full capacity of 100%. The reason for this has to do with highly, scientific technology, something you might want to just take the expert's word for it.
